SAFETY CONCERNS FOR
PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
DESIGN AND RENOVATIONS TO BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
TAMU-CC designs new buildings and plans renovations to existing
facilities and grounds to provide access for persons with disabilities
in compliance with federal and state regulations.
ACCESSIBILITY STRUCTURES AND EQUIPMENT
Disabled parking areas, walkways, wheelchair ramps, sidewalk curbs,
automatic doors, elevator entrances, and other accessibility equipment
must remain accessible at all times for persons with mobility and
vision impairments, or reasonable alternatives for access must be
posted or announced and provided. For the safety of blind persons,
branches overhanging sidewalks should be trimmed to be least 7'
above the ground, and other foliage, equipment, hoses or construction
materials should not extend into or be placed in walkway areas.
Sidewalk curbs should be clear of foliage or other barriers to the
white canes used by blind persons. Braille tabs on elevator buttons
and any accessibility-related signs must not be removed. 'Area of
Rescue Assistance' signs and flashing lights for deaf persons must
not be removed or blocked, and must be checked during fire alarms
and regularly to insure they are operable.
FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES
Information on evacuation consideration for persons with disabilities
is included in the 'Building Fire Alarm and Emergency Evacuation
Procedures' and the 'Miramar Fire Safety Procedures'. The University
police are trained in specific methods for the safe physical evacuation
of persons with mobility impairments. Each upper story for buildings
built since 1990 will have at least one 'area of rescue assistance'
for persons who cannot use stairs; this area is near a designated
stairwell and marked by a sign with a light that flashes when alarms
are activated.
REPORTING ACCESSIBILITY BARRIERS AND VIOLATIONS
Accessibility barriers in buildings and grounds (e.g., in walkways,
roadways, doorways, out-of-order elevators and automatic doors,
etc.) should be reported immediately to Physical Plant, at 825-2324.
Barriers to access of disabled parking spaces or areas should be
reported to the University Police, 825-4444.
REPORTING CONCERNS OR GRIEVANCES REGARDING SAFETY FOR PERSONS WITH
DISABILITIES ON CAMPUS
Students with concerns or grievances about safe physical access
and safety procedures on campus should report them to the Office
for Students with Disabilities - 825-5816.
Employees should address concerns with the University Equal Opportunity,
Employee Relations, Training & Development Office - 825-5826; these
offices will work with the Environmental Health & Safety Office,
Campus Police, Physical Plant personnel, Safety Committee and others
as needed for resolution
